Beatrice's Rose

cowabungabreakfast One discovers this album in a manner similar to that by which they might discover a deep pond in the middle of the woods by the ruins of a building. There is obvious intention and purpose; obvious planning and meaning. Yet, ultimately, it is simply a mystery which has manifested itself for you to see as you are able. The haunting melodies and unique instrumentation help this work feel like nothing else - at least nothing that has walked this Earth for many ages. Favorite track: Beatrice's Rose.

So many tales are painted on this wall They say she keeps on painting to this day One day I think that she will paint them all. The building of the tower and the call To those who came to visit or to stay So many tales are painted on this wall The Cedar King, his queen, their rise and fall The bird reborn to build anew, Jingwei One day I think that she will paint them all The Insect King who climbed the tree so tall When brought to war, his friends he would not slay So many tales are painted on this wall The ones who cut the bridge to make it fall The ones who left, the ones who chose to stay One day I think that she will paint them all The triumphs and disasters big and small A noble deed, an ordinary day So many tales are painted on this wall One day I think that she will paint them all
2.
Who shall I kill today? Who do I see arrayed on the battlefield before me? I see my own true friend. I have rattled my saber I have bared my teeth Now shall I kill my own true friend? I will throw down my weapon I will fight no more Let the enemy overtake me Let them slay me where I stand
3.
We once stood tall then we did fall and then we saw what we had lost and so some left and so some stayed and in between we built a bridge and on that bridge we crossed our way until once more we had our fall
4.
Father sea and mother sky They had three children, their names were Garos the waves and Fodos the currents and Mirabella the still waters Now Mirabella was the most beautiful of the three And her brothers loved her so But they grew jealous and they began to fight each other And they heaved up mountains and they carved out valleys And they toppled mountains and they filled in valleys And Mirabella, she was afraid and she hid And their father said stop your fighting The one you claim to be fighting for you have frightened away And even to this day anywhere you see the waves anywhere you see the currents you will not see the still waters
5.
And then the band began to play And the Cedar King sat down beside the Ashen Queen And he began to sing her this song: I've got a lot to worry about but I'm not gonna worry right now What can you do but laugh when there's nothing else left to do Do you want to walk with me? In this garden In the shade
6.
One day this sea of sadness will become A garden, like the one that was before One day all of these things will be undone A bird will carry pebbles to the shore and throw them one by one into the sea and turn and fly away to gather more Each story's end begins another one As mountains are eroded to restore More ancient hills, where ancient rivers run Past eaves and apple trees that line the banks Of holy river Alph, where cormorants Bring fish to fishermen, who give their thanks And on the shore, children reach out their hands And stretch their arms, and legs, and necks as if In imitation of the cormorants And on the other shore, arrayed in ranks An army fit to fight, their idle hands Have turned to pageantry and shooting blanks No stone will stand atop another one The depths will swallow all that came before Beneath the sea, where deeper currents run A girl, Jingwei, will fall with many more And tumble and be swallowed by the sea And be reborn: that bird upon the shore A loss like this can never be undone The very thing that she seeks to restore Keeps Jingwei blind to what it will become

Is It Love 02:15
Is it love? Oh tell me, is it love? I have seen you before and I knew I would see you again It is more than love this I know It is more than love I am sure Is it too soon to say That I want to spend my life with you?
8.
I see a bird Oh God I see a bird A bird made of fire Oh God I see a bird It draws near Oh God it draws near The fire burns me Oh God it draws near I'm not fine Oh God I'm not fine Sophia help me Oh God I'm not fine Your touch hurts Oh God your touch hurts Colder than ice Oh God your touch hurts Get away from me Oh God get away I can't stand it Oh God get away I'm alone now Oh God I'm alone It's gone at last Oh God I'm alone Are you next? Oh God are you next? My dear Sophia Oh God are you next? Do it to me Oh God do it to me I will take this burden Oh God do it to me
9.
Please stand if you are able And join us in singing Hymn number 1 She has given me this task She has given me this task To watch the world And I shall keep in mind All of these things That I have seen And I shall write anew
10.
I wanna walk with you I wanna talk with you I wanna rock with you Just like we used to do I wanna see the stars I wanna look for Mars Far from the streets and cars I wanna see the stars
11.
All my life I have waited With trepidation For this situation Alone I stand Before my god Alone I stand Beside myself All my life I have wondered With fascination About transformation Alone I stand Before my god Alone I stand Beside myself Whom I must answer to I have always been Dante They will call me Beatrice
12.
I pound the stones and I think about home My body hurts more but the memories less I am a wandering stone I am a wandering stone I can not leave it all behind me I can make it just a little bit easier I cannot make it go away I cannot make it go away

When Beatrice's work was done There was a creeping briar there So green beneath the morning sun She followed it all down the stair Away across the sea of stones There was a creeping briar there It led her to her lover's bones Where sweet Sophia had been laid Away across the sea of stones "How long have I my love betrayed That there has grown such thicket here Where sweet Sophia had been laid?" "How long since I last held her dear Could she have missed and longed for me That there has grown such thicket here?" "I do not know how that could be But the dead do not dream, so how Could she have missed and longed for me?" "If I could, then I'd go right now I'd once more be again with her. But the dead do not dream, so how?" "I pray my bones here to inter That future storytellers say I'd once more be again with her" "The dead know not of night or day Our love will be but one of those That future storytellers say" "And from my grave will grow a rose Like rose and briar stories past Our love will be but one of those" And all this happened, to the last And the rose grew round the briar Like rose and briar stories past Grew till they could grow no higher All green beneath the morning sun And the rose grew round the briar When Beatrice's work was done There was a creeping briar there All green beneath the morning sun

about

This album is based on Perpetual Dawn, a series of interconnected fantasy stories that I've been working on since 2006. Each song represents a moment from one of my stories, spanning the entire history of the world from before creation to the far future.

I knew that for the first album based on my life's work, I wanted to do something that would push my limits as a songwriter, producer and musician. I grew a lot during the months that I spent putting this together. Not everything came out just the way I wanted it to, but that's because my reach has always, always exceeded my grasp, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I tried to incorporate as much of my musical interests and values as I could. The sounds I grew up with, including Zimbabwean music, as well as the sounds I grew into like techno and Appalachian folk music. Jaw harp, synthesizer, Harpejji, and of course lots and lots of vocal layering.
