Melmoth and Gloria, the two great gods who hold the world in balance, grew bored. They decided to perform an experiment, to see whether the torments of hell could be a real thing. Melmoth believed that the gods were not creative enough to make something so cruel, while Gloria believed that the gods could create something so cruel, but would stay their hand rather than let it drag out forever.

So they sent a bird of fire to torment Dante, and drive him away from Sophia. He struck her and fled from her presence, and the bird convinced him that she hated him.

The bird then left Dante and began to torment Sophia, and Dante said that he would rather have the bird torment him than see Sophia go through it. At this, Melmoth admitted to Gloria that she was right, and that they had to stop this reckless experiment.
